Edirol UA-5 dissection photos
The Edirol UA-5 (distributed by Roland) is a 2-channel 24-bit/96 kHz USB audio interface with a good collection of analog and digital inputs and outputs. I use it for recording concerts and as a quality sound card. Works like a charm on Linux and Win2k (Linux users: here's some more information on UA-5 support on Linux!). The only drawback so far has been that it cannot be used without modification as a stand-alone A/D box (from one of the analog inputs to it's S/P DIF digital output), so that one could use it with, for example, the Archos Jukebox Recorders instead of a laptop.
As usual, I wanted to take a look at what the box had eaten, so I opened it up, and took some photos of the internals on the way so that I wouldn't need to open it up again if I wanted to re-check something. Here are the photos in case you're interested, and some information on the components I found. If you identify more chips (or figure a way to do a non-destructive modification to do standalone A/D), please share your information with me.
NEWS FLASH! Photos of an UA-5 with the standalone AD modification have arrived. I have also successfully modified my own unit, with a switch to toggle the modification on and off!
