help with soundmodem and RASCAL

I am new to ham radio. And I am looking for advice, pointers, docs on
what I need to do to get this RASCAL soundcard interface working with my
radio. Do I need the AX.25 kernel stuff? is it only soundmodem I need?

As you can tell I am a bit confused!
