I compile all my sourcecode under /usr/src
Why on earth put (and compile) source elsewhere?

Agree. I guess Waldemar missed this library when installing Slackware.
Fortunately he can just go to the directory where the file
ncurses-5.37-i386-1.tgz exists and type
installpkg ncurses-5.3-i386-1.tgz
(or whatever way he likes to install packages) :-)
