Hi Marco and Matti and all

Check out SCC and ESCC and PCI-SCC cards - simple modems and stunning
performance! I'm in process of setting up my old trusty PA0HZP
OptoPCSCC Card under Mandrake 9.0 at present (thanks to list and Wilbert
    for ax25 so far).

    Cheers

The "KISS" mode is something that radio-amateur oriented TNCs do.

Having only a modem chip, or maybe just soundcard is definitely
    doable.

    See http://www.baycom.org/~tom/ham/soundmodem/
