Which driver are you using? OSS or ALSA? Try the ALSA drivers, you can get
them at http://www.alsa-project.org/.
I never tested soundmodem on a i810, but i own a portable computer with
that chip and i had many problems and limited funcionality with the OSS
kernel drivers.
