    Hm. MIC inputs often have fairly bad frequency response on the low end, so if available

    Check the eye diagram on the receive side, and make sure you are not overdriving the transmit side...

    As to the PTT problem: maybe just changing the type of y from unsigned char to unsigned int might help, can you check?
