Yes EXT3 support isn't a distribution issue but a kernel issue.
If you have a kernel that supports it, then your distro should support it.
Remember if you are going to use ext3, you need to make a journal file.
Some distros will do it for you, I'm not sure about Slack.
If it doesn't you can do this:
(as root)
# tune2fs -j /dev/hd[abc]
And use the proper letter for your drive (hda, hdb, hdc, etc)
tune2fs is part of the ext2utils package IIRC...
Check the manpage for tune2fs to be sure...
