In ye olde days we only had "butt ugly" names allowed for device names,
like ax0 pt0a etc. So there was this concept of the "port name" like
vhf, sydney, 70cm which was an ugly hack and grafted onto the system,
those names are really a figment of the ax25 libraries and tools
imagination, they then use the port files to find the ax25 callsign.
Bit like naming your ethernet "internal" and having some file that
mapped "internal" to the mac address.
OK, I think we agree that's pretty yuk.
Time has moved on and now interfaces can have nice names. My IPv6
tunnels are called things like trumpet and azure. Makes things a lot
easier. And no nasty lookup file!
So perhaps we should re-look at how these tunnels are named and use the
same thing for the ax25 devices. I'm just not sure if the energy is
there :/ It would sure clean up the configuration files a lot.
