Some time ago I did a patch to the ifconfig source code that did something
like this. It detected if a particular device was an ax25 device, and if so
added the port name from axports to one of the lines that ifconfig produced.
I submitted it to the ifconfig maintainer, who was quite happy to include
it, but didnt use ax25 in his kernels so couldnt apply/test it! Then work
got in the way, and it never made it to completion :-(
I think it also worked on netrom and rose devices.
I may still have the code somewhere if there's interest in it.
