    Yes.
    I've always felt a little uncomfortable about the two-name problem myself.

    I can't help but believe that the separation is probably unnecessary.

    One idea I had in mind was a simple patch that would allow each Linux network
    'device' to have associated with it a short ascii string representing it's
    real-world 'name' or 'label'. I personally think that'd be kinda elegant to
    cover the case of programs like slattach, pppd and kissattach returning
    variably named 'devices' even though at configuration time I had some invariant
    thing in mind, that is, to store the association between the two.

    I wonder though how such a patch would be viewed by the wider Linux networking
    community?
