    ELF was supported on kernel 1.2.x. Red Hat 5 would certainly have been
    ELF-based.

    No it wouldn't, as major library versions (5 versus 6) are not compatible.
    RH 5.2 was libc 5, for sure. ldd should have shown the missing libc6 if
    that was the case. I didn't see the ldd output posted here?

    I would advise upgrading the kernel to 2.2.x or 2.4.x.
