Yes, I agree that it it would be best to have the PTC-II controlled directly
by kernel-AX25. Until someone writes a Linux device driver for extended-
hostmode, this is not possible. I don't think there is a problem. The
extended-hostmode protocol is public. In fact, some of the code could be
borrowed from TNT.
The comment on IP over HF PACTOR was made in jest. However, it may
be feasable with the faster (and wider) PACTOR-3.
Probably the easiest way to use your PTC with Linux, is to have a node
running on the computer, with a pseudo-TTY on a serial port.
You hook the PTC up to the serial port, and make sure that box=0 and
remote=0 and pd=1
Anything they type will go to the tty link to the Node. They'll get the node
prompt. The pd will handle the link change-over as required. You would
also have to look at the TERM and TNC parameters.
Alternatively, you could install a packet modem in the PTC, and run the
packet baseband audio over two shielded pairs to a TNC/BayCom
modem etc, in full duplex.
That way, the HF user gets the mailbox (box=1, remote=1, pd=1) and
links to the Linux node with the normal gateway command.
Essentially, this is what I do. The only difference is, the HF station is 20
km away on a hill, and the packet is a 70 cm (radio:-) link. Users log into
my Linux PC at home to any AX25D service by picking the correct SSID
to connect to (TTYlink, AWZnode, telnet etc etc)
Anyway, I am intrigued by Terry's solution for Rose, something I don't
know much about. Also Tomi's NEWQPSK, capable of carrying IP. So
many things to try...and not enough time!!
