I've been asked by someone, who severely criticised me over another otherwise
fine piece of software let down by poor documentation, to explain how I managed
to get the soundmodem software going.

Anyway, I'm happy to follow that request if it helps someone else. I have
    attached a micro-howto from Kevin O'Rorke <terhi.victor@logonet.com> which pretty
    well covers it all.

Nuno Sucena has provided his AX25 configuration files at:
    http://www.co.it.pt/~slug/packet/
These are handy to confirm your own configuration.

The answer to my own question was to run the command modprobe mkiss,
something that I'd overlooked at the time.

Finally, I've used the serial port (RTS, pin 4) to key the transmitter
because I have a rotator controller and Doppler shift corrector connected to
    the parallel port.
