Out of curiosity, I had a play with this the other day, testing it through the
local loopback port. It works as advertised in the latest AX25 HOWTO.
There are a couple of funnies, however:
The daemon fails to resolve SSID routes defined in ax25ipd.conf.
Instead, I made it work by defining the '<callsign>-0' SSID in
ax25ipd.conf, in which case all SSIDs to <callsign> get routed to the
stated IP address. Don't bother trying to use SSIDs other than -0 in the
ax25ipd.conf table.
Another funny is, that the daemon won't find ax25ipd.conf in it's alledged
'default' place (/etc/ax25/ax25ipd.conf). I had to use 'ax25ipd -c
/etc/ax25/ax25ipd.conf' to make it work.
If you set debug level in the conf file to 4, you get lots of nice debugging
info. Don't forget: you can also use 'listen -a -c -p <axip-port>' to see
what goes on, on the axip circuit.
Another (probably obvious) point: it's all very well mapping callsigns to IP
addresses in ax25ipd.conf, but the kernel needs to know what network
device to send the IP stuff out on. In other words: you may need to set
static IP and ARP routes, or the IP frames won't go anywhere...
AX25IPD is, in my view, really nifty. By running the IP end over the local
loopback port, I can test out my ax25d, connect to all my ax25 services
from any packet application, as if it were over the air.
