I don't know about any written convention, but a fairly universal one
for AX.25 appears to be as follows:

       -0 User in person.
       -2 2m node.
       -4 4m node.
       -7 70cm, node.
       -8 BBS.
       -12 TCP/IP node.
       -15 NET/ROM relay.

I've never seen this written down, but have observed that pattern in
various areas of both England and Scotland when I've been living there.
I've also been told that -6 is used for 6m nodes, but have never seen
any nodes on 6m so can't confirm that such is the case.

    Best wishes from Riley.
