Makes unattended operation more challenging...
Ever considered building a robot to press the button? :-)
I haven't used soundmodem for a while, so apply grains of salt as required.
A quick perusal of the kernel soundmodem code suggests
that the output is held quiet when not transmitting,
at least for half duplex, so consider making up a VOX circuit.
This also gives you your serial port back.
Whether this holds for the user version, or if it's relevant, I don't know.
