    Hi Hamish.

I refer to this comment of yours below.

When I came across this, I emailed Bester asking if it was an official
release. In response, I received an email containing over 2 Megabytes
of advertising for Bester's commercial version of SatTrack, without
the slightest pretense of answering my qwuery. Having repeated the
process three times after Y2K in case Bester was bogged down in Y2K
support at the time (this was December 1999 that I came across it,
after all), and received exactly the same response each time, I have
to say that I'm of the opinion that Bester has officially abandoned
    the SatTrack 3.1 series.

Personally, I'm now of the opinion that until such time as Bester
officially declares these 3.1.7 RPM's as being unofficial, the only
sensible option is to regard them as official.

    > The license for SatTrack does not allow somebody else to make

The license in the 3.1.6 sources doesn't allow distribution of patched
versions (with or without a change of version number), or of patches
against the sources. As a result, if your comment about the Debian
sources above is correct, then the said Debian sources are in breach
    of the SatTrack licence.

Basically, if you wish to use SatTrack 3.1.6 under the terms of the
licence, then you also wish to use it with the Y2K bug still present.
The SatTrack licence in the 3.1.6 sources allows for no other options.

    > So I'm not sure I should be looking at your patches.

Not my patches - those are the patches that had been applied to 3.1.6
to produce the 3.1.7 RPM's that I came across. I just analysed those
patches to see precicely what had changed, and make sure there's no
viruses or trojans or the like in them.

    > I would like to see something very similar in layout to SatTrack
    > but free.

I'd love that as well, but my coding skills on their own aren't up to
the task - I'd need somebody with decent graphics coding skills to
    help.

If you're willing to help, how about setting up such a project on
    SourceForge or similar?

    Best wishes from Riley.
