That is something I can't help with, so have to pass on to others for

As far as I'm aware, the various RedHat distributions use the following
kernels:
Dist 5.1 5.2 6.0 6.1 6.2 7.0 7.1
Kernel 2.0.34 2.0.36 2.2.5 2.2.12 2.2.14 2.2.16 2.4.2
Based on that, I'd suggest you try either 7.0 or 7.1 for your AX.25
system.

I can't comment on flexnet, but it is very simple to link computers
together with Ethernet, and here in the UK, NE2000 clone network cards
can be picked up for £1 each quite easily.
