From your words below i presume you need a terminal program to talk to a
telephone modem, you certainly dont have to be root to use minicom, you may
however need to change the permissions on /dev/ttySx (x) being normally 0 or
1.
As root change those permissions with;
chmod 666 /dev/ttySx or change the ownership to you account name with;
chown user /dev/ttySx
Another program is 'seyon'.
Anyway, if you use PPP to connect to your ISP surly you can simply use telnet
to connect to the remote host.
