I recently built and installed the 2.4.9 kernel (with the correction from
dl9sau) and the latest ax25 packages that are used on the local node. The
only snag encountered was when I attempted to start axdigi. It got real
angry and refused to load because some sort of shared library was not
present. Since I have had no problems with any of the previous kernels I
have used, I rebuilt axdigi (btw, does require fixing header file includes).
Although I have not had an opportunity to test it on the air yet, it starts
and appears to run in the background as it should.
In the process of doing this, I read Craig's comments, in which he thought
the digi function would eventually be built into the kernel. Have briefly
looked over the kernel docs, but the only reference to ax25 points to this
group. Has the digi function been incorporated into the kernel, or must
axdigi still be used to get the function? My impression is that it's not
there...
If you are wondering why anyone would want to digipeat, I want to tunnel
APRS through the backbone of our network. If any of you have had experience
doing this, I would be interested in your comments.

John Bennett
