Do you have the mkiss module installed ?
modprobe mkiss
What does strace says?
I used something like this for a previous soundmodem(kernel) installation:
(...)
modprobe mkiss
/usr/sbin/net2kiss -i sm0 /dev/ptya0 &
sleep 1 # this is a slow computer :)
/usr/sbin/kissattach /dev/ttya0 radio 10.1.0.1
(...)
Now i use the usermode soundmodem-0.4 with a linux 2.4.9 kernel on a
debian(stable) 486 system so i don't need the above lines anymore. But if
you want to use NOS you will need to use something similar.
If you can't get it working, i might try to install NOS here since i've
done it before, but when 2.0.x linux kernels where STA :))
