Assuming RedHat have not changed the way they used to do things, copy
    /usr/src/linux/arch/<system>/defconfig to /usr/src/linux/.config to start
with - where <system> is i386 or whatever.

Next, edit /usr/src/linux/Makefile and about 3-4 lines down change
EXTRAVERSION to include your initials or something similar. This will then
create a unique /lib/modules tree for the new compile.

When doing the make menuconfig (or whichever you usually do) check that
module versions is either on or off depending on what you really want to do.

I seem to recall that RedHat 7.1 requires a different compiler for the kernel
    - not sure how this is set up but I'm sure there is information on one of the
mailing list archives associated with RedHat that will detail how the correct
    one is chosen.

When installing the new kernel, KEEP THE OLD ONE. Silly point to make but
ensure you can still boot the old stuff after changing lilo/grub or whatever
your boot preference is before actually booting to the new one.

Finally, thats about as much generic Linux stuff as I would expect to see on
this list - looks like we really _DO_ need that HOWTO update :-))
