My lifepartner Gwen NG3P just ran into exactly this problem last night;
(although she was recompiling for another reason, not to add AX.25) The
kernel modules were a dog's breakfast after she tried to compile a new
kernel.
We did "rpm --upgrade --force" with the kernel RPM to restore her
modules and get her back in business; fortunately we had a good enough
rescue disk.
We'd be interested in hearing other experiences in this environment.
