I used the Linux AX25 software almost 3 years ago to play around with
packet radio. Shortly after that, 1200bps packet on 2 meters basically
died out in my area. I've been looking at it again with the intention
of getting an APRS station on the air, and I was also looking for ways
to help contribute to Linux AX25 development.
As I was looking at the documentation, I made a few observations:
1. The Linux AX25 HOWTO is very out of date, not having been updated
since October 1997.
2. The Linux HAM HOWTO also hasn't been updated since 1997 and is no
longer on-line at the Linux Documentation Project site.
3. The AX25 software on SourceForge has essentially no documentation
beyond the man pages.
As someone who actually enjoys writing, and author of a couple of
Linux HOWTOs already, I'd be interesting in tackling the project to
update the AX25 and/or Ham HOWTOs. I would do this provided that (1)
I felt that there was a reasonable level of interest in these HOWTOs,
and (2) people on this mailing list could help answer questions on
things I am not familiar with or cannot test because I don't have the
necessary equipment.
Any thoughts on whether this would be useful, or is the Linux AX25
community so small that it doesn't justify documenting beyond man
pages and the source code? My feeling is that the lack of HOWTO
documentation is a barrier to getting more people using these tools.
I'm guessing the AX25 HOWTO would be a higher priority to update
that the HAM HOWTO (although probably more work).
I don't want to step on any toes, and if Terry Dawson or someone else
is planning to update these HOWTOs soon, I'll gladly step aside, but I
suspect that the developers' time is better spent working on the AX25
code and people like me who aren't core developers can help out by
testing and documenting.
