I think I have configured the various ulist files under /etc/ax25/ correctly.
However, I'm still uncertain about the meaning of a free channel. If this
refers the the radio channel to the BBS then I'm in trouble because it is
almost never free. I have to connect via 2 digipeaters before I can connect
to the BBS.
My version of "The Manual" has devoted four lines to the mail function and
makes no mention of a free channel.
