Now Richard, I think that's a bit harsh. While I'm as happy as anybody to
say "RTFM" where its deserved, in this case TFM doesnt have the full story:
Firstly, when initially installing ax25, how would you know in advance that
a program which you would install later was "broken" - ie had a hard coded
location instead of using the library function which would have removed this
dependency? At the time you first install ax25 that option has no obvious
    relevance.
Secondly, Phil knew that reinstalling was one way to solve the immediate
problem - so he had RTFM!
Thirdly, who's to say that other programs had not hard coded the alternative
location, so would break if the default location were not used? In other
words there could be mutually incompatible programs!

The real issue is the way in which programs are coded by developers. How
many people have NOT persevered like Phil has, but just gave up and said
"Linux is no good for packet". These problems are not documented, and rely
on quite a good knowledge of Linux to resolve. I can easily imagine a
newcomer to Unix returning to the MS world after these sorts of problems!

    cheers
    Steve
