Would it not be a good idea to have read the INSTALL files(s) in the ax25-
apps lib and tools archives, that could have saved all these problems.

Here is the small and relavant piece.

By default, it will install the files in /usr/local. To change this
so that binaries go in /usr and the conf files go in /etc
            ./configure --prefix=/usr --sysconfdir=/etc --localstatedir=/var
            make
            make install

I quite often wonder why Terry Dawson choose to have the default in
/usr/local as when Jonathan Naylor G4KLX who wrote all the ax25 stuff
changed from /usr/local to /etc way back, anyway it is all documented.
