I'm not sure whether this is the same issue as you're seeing, but when I was
writing code to enable my lnxforward package to (so-called) telnet forward
to an FBB system, I discovered that the FBB system both inserted AND
required an extra 0xFF in the data stream, each time a real 0xFF occurred.
Without them, CRC errors occurred. I cant recall if the remote FBB was 5.51c
or Linux back then. This extra 0xFF is NOT part of the X-forward
specification, so i just assumed that it was part of the FBB (and IIRC,
    JNOS) implementations.

However, my Linux systems FBB systems always bind to the ports directly, and
so dont need to go via node. (Both ax25 and tcp ports). An incoming ax25
connect to node can then escape off, connect to the BBS, and compressed
forward OK, but I've not tried it with a telnet connect.

    I hope this helps
