I'm currently using ulistd/axgetmsg/axgetmail to get mail from my local
BBS on a Gnome desktop. While this all works OK, I can't help feeling
things could be a lot better.
I have …
1) File manager showing me a directory of all the messages
downloaded, so from the creation time, I can see if anything new has
arrived.
2) gless text file viewer open so I can drag/drop messages into it
from the file manager so I can read them
3) Another gless window open with the contents of the BBS file from
the ulistd directory, just to see if there are other messages that I may
want to get
4) A terminal window so I can issue ad hoc axgetmsg commands to get
messages that don't automatically download.
… and then of course I have to periodically refresh the contents of the
file manager screen and the BBS ulistd screen to see what's new, and
there's the complication of private mail going to a different directory to
normal mail
It seems to me what I really need is an intelligent front-end to
ulistd/axgetmsg/axgetmail that …
1) uses just one window which gets refreshed automatically.
2) in that window it displays the contents of the ulistd bbs header
file, and remember how far down the list I have read
3) Using different fonts or colours, it can indicate if a msg already
exists on the local PC
4) Clicking on a msg header will automatically open the message for
reading, or get it if it isn't on the PC
5) It should be possible to mark several files and get them all in
one batch
6) It should be possible to edit the ulistd.conf file so that if a
new interesting topic starts all messages will be automatically downloaded
from then on, and of course get rid of topics that are now boring.
It seems to me that this is a fairly basic requirement. Is there anything
like this in existence already ?
I have used LinPac, but this is impossible to use over a VNC link because
of the keystroke combinations, and the fonts and graphics all go wonky on
certain screen/font sizes, and lets face it, a proper X GUI would look a
lot neater.
I find it difficult to believe that what I want, does not already exist.
How do all you people use ulistd/axgetmail ? or do you use it like me ?
The bottom line is that, if nothing like what I want exists, then I am
prepared to write it. BUT, while I've been programming computers for over
25 years, I've not done anything on Linux/Unix before, and I don't get
much free time, so it's going to be a steep learning curve, and a long
time before anything comes out of it. So to save me the hassle, does
anything like what I want already exist ?
