    Hi colin
i guess i am not very good at explaining things hihi
the reason the numbers are so high is because to turn off the excape char's
you need '256' adding to the permission of anyone
who will be using compression though your node.
this number doesnt give anyone more access or anything it just
turns of the escape char's thats all
you have to add the rest of the permissions up
to get the access that poeple need.

hope this is a better explaination.

    ian

the list is below of permissions.

1 permits logging in even if no other
                                permissions are given.

                         2 permits outgoing AX.25 connects.

                         4 permits outgoing NET/ROM connects.

8 permits telneting to hosts in the
                                "local" network as defined in
                                node.conf(5).

16 permits telneting to hosts in ampr
                                net.

32 permits telneting to hosts neither in
the "local" network nor in amprnet.

64 permits using hidden ports in outgo
                                ing AX.25 connections. (See Hidden
                                Ports command in node.conf(5).)

                         128 permits outgoing ROSE connects.

256 The no-escape flag. Disables the
                                escape mechanism for this user.
