kernel 2.4.2-2

Tried compiling kernel with ax25/modules support. When compiling modules I
got an error and wound up reinstalling from scratch to recover and didn't
save any info. I sort of remember reading somewhere about needing to use a
differen't compiler (maybe a makefile change) to compile properly on RH 7.1.
Any suggestions before I recreate the previous events? Or where I might find
the answer?
