Ahhh - that *must* be it... I'm no newbie, and I've figured out a lot of
similar things over the years - but truthfully, I don't think I would have

Exactly right. I actually do have everything installed - in fact,
soundmodem-0.2 and -0.3 appeared to work fine... (heck,
soundmodemconfig from -0.4 works fine)... I'm stuck on 2.2.19
anyway, until I can figure out why my ide-cdrom on ide1 loses
its interrupts in 2.4.5... when I get that ironed out, then
I'll have to look into what's happening with the user-space soundmodem 8*)
(I'd really like to get that working)

Right. I load and unload everything quickly, to initialize the
mad16. The rmmod confirmation, for whatever reason, didn't
make it into the quick stdout dump...
