    Hmm. What if you use sethdlc to send a calibration tone? Anything then?
    You must get the serial driver to release the port. Use
    "setserial /dev/ttyS<N> uart none" to do that. The kernel-based soundmodem
    has its own serial driver, just like it has its own sound card driver.

    Do you have the kernel sound drivers installed? If I recall correctly,
    the user-space soundmodem uses the regular sound drivers. The kernel-based
    one had its own sound drivers.

    OK looks like you didn't do that setserial thing.. see above.
