    I thought you would be inteligent enought to read the man page, (left the -p)
    out intentionaly, ;-)

    Well kissparms AFAIK does not place a TNC into kissmode, however minicom does.

    minicom -s
    choose serial port setup
    set parms
    choose exit
    (you are still in minicom)
    I belive you have a MFJ1296 i dont know what the initialisation sequence is, a
    PK232 for example is 3 * (asteriks) one after the other should get you the
    command mode, after that type 'kisson' and then if possable restrt, nore,
    restart is not nessacasy with all TNC's.
