Are you using the sound modem built in to the kernel, or the user space
one?
If you are using the kernel one, then you must remove the normal
sound modules (rmmod) -- soundmodem has its own drivers for the sound
card and they can't share with the sound modules.
If you use the user space ones (ie the soundmodem program), then
I think it does use the normal audio drivers so you must have them
inserted.
