Normally speaking it makes no differance which distro one uses, the kernel is
the same, all kernels thesedays have AX25 NET/ROM support, + of course lots of
other ham protocols.
I suggest you read some documentation on compiling a kernel, for a detailed
description of what to do for a kernel including ham radio support read the
AX25-HOWTO, i cant say where to find it on a SUSE system but its possably in
/usr/doc/*
