Yep, I've done quite a bit of prodding now.

OK, machine is definitely in EPP 1.9 only mode.
TMC TI6VG MB, via chipset:
With genuine v0.9 driver source I get a fail at the
very first epp_write_addr (epp timeout).
However, if I put in PPFLAG_SWEMULEPP to force the
function table to be updated with a s/w EPP emulation
then it gets a bit futher:
In this case it runs through the first section of the
bitrate probe OK (reading 256byte chunks now and then
for 0.5 seconds) with bytecount accumulating to a
value just under 38kbit. Then it moves on to the
section that reads byte by byte until the fifo is empty
to get the accurate bytecount, reading the status
latch between each byte. This is where the problems
arrive.
The status latch is read and says that there are data
still in the fifo (NREF shows not empty) but a data
read then fails.
Haven't got much further yet, and I am desparate to
get this going within the next month.
