you're right. I was definately root.

The only non-standard things on this RH7.0 distribution are the
TurboLinux kernel source/headers and the absence of kernel-headers-2.4.0
All the other non-starndard stuff is in /usr/local

You're right there!!! The "mysteriously murdered" error message is
the most bizarre thing I have ever seen linux produce.
