For the linux side use ssh -- more people use version 1 (ssh1) than
use version 2 because of licensing restrictions, and the two are not
compatible. Ssh comes with a secure file transfer utility called
scp. Ssh is available in rpm and tarball, but I can't remember
exactly where I found the rpm package.
For the windows side use TeraTerm.
I've been very happy using both ssh and TeraTerm. Links for both
can be found on http://w4atc.ncsu.edu
