If you are doing non-anonymous ftp (which I assume you are, considering
that you are worrying about passwords) ssh comes with a program
called scp (secure copy) which uses ssh encryption from
transfering files (I know OpenSSH does this, I am pretty sure the other
ssh packages do as well)
