     Interesting that

Then how come look at the issue of axipd the dist I have suse7.0 1.0
compiled from the latest ax25 utils 1.02/0.0.4, this version works with the
later 2.2 kernels, I don't know about 2.4 kernels as I've never tried them yet

Or is this some strange phenomenom which make Redhat Clones change the issue
    number?
And as for this being the wrong place according to SuSE for items pertaining
to linux for ham use,, then why is the news group called linux-hams.
It's exactly for this type of reason.
I wasted a lot of time trying to get axip working on the local network here
using SuSE 7.0 and the axutils provided in that package, compiling the
latest version and latest version of ax25ipd, allowed it to work.
If this stops some other person from wasting their time , that's the purpose of
    this group
