HI Barry,
Like as said Sanyi,
on the rc.local you can to put this line.
/bin/su -l root -c "/usr/X11R6/bin/xinit"
and on the .xinitrc on your /root dir
to put on it everthing that you want to run
like me I have this on this file
fbb xwin &
xastir &
mtrack &
other_X_program &
startkde #this is on last line
that's all
NOTE: remember that you need to boot-up the linux ID:3 not 5
you can edit your /etc/inittab file for this
