For anyone who may be interested - I think I found that patch -
Check http://people.redhat.com/twaugh/parport/ and look for
patch-2.2.17-ppdev1. The patch appears to be applicable to
a 2.2.18 kernel (with a little fuzz), and the 2.2.18 kernel
I built with it now allows me to cat to /dev/parport0
When I get a chance, I'll build a new kernel at home and try
it with soundmodem [actually, soundmodem-0.4 has had trouble
talking with my soundcard -- though the corresponding
soundmodemconfig seems to work just fine] --- I'm hoping I'll
soon be back to report success 8*)
