You dont really need "programming skills at all period."
What you need to know is;
Read the documents supplied with the archive, files like;
INSTALL
README
Most archives thesedays require you to do the following,
./configure
make
make install
Possably there are "needed configure options", however if one has read the
flipping README or INSTALL then one will know what to do, its as simple as
that.
There is absolutly NO need to fool around with the supplied source code,
its simply supplied so that hackers can do as they please with it.
Like Tomi mentioned, use a distribution that has rpm's like redhat or
debian, you then normally speaking do not even have to compile your own
programs, someone else did that for you.
