/dev/ttyS0 was the answer! Thanks.
My next error was about "...I/O ERROR" and I remembered that
when I first built this system for IP MASQ, I had no need
for serial or parallel ports. Sure enough, they were disabled
in BIOS. I rebooted, edited BIOS, rebooted and then
'kissattach' returned:
AX.25 port ax0 bound to device ax0
Yee haw!
