This system was already booting 2.2.17
(I can tell by the 'login:' prompt when it boots).
I 'just wanted to make sure' that the compiled kernel image included
amateur radio & mkiss support. I didn't change anything when I ran
#make config
and, sure enough, those were the identical responses I got,
before and after, '#make bzimage'. I didn't think that I needed
to run '#make install' to boot the new image on the floppy disk.
However, your are correct, I did not run '#make install'.
