Is that all you did to compile and install a new kernel,? how about
installing it as well. If that is all you did i bet issuing the command
'uname -a' will return something other than kernel 2.2.17.

The kernel has "nothing to do with man pages".
'man' is a program, which shows pages of information installed from
utilitys like "mkiss", or i had beter say (in this case) when you install
the nessacary ax25-tools ax25-apps and the nessacary libax25.

It sounds to me like you need to go back 3 spaces and start over, return to
my home page and do some more reading.
You also need to install at least
libax25-0.0.7.tar.gz
ax25-apps-0.0.4.tar.gz
ax25-tools-0.0.5.tar.gz
node-0.3.0.tar.gz
When you have downloaded the above and read the README / INSTALL files
included in them, done as they tell you, then you will have not only manual
pages for mkiss but for ALL the ax25 utilitys, plus a better chance of
getting things to work.
They can be found at;
ftp://hes.iki.fi/pub/ham/linux/ax25/
Or;
http://sourceforge.net/(somewhere)
Or quite possably your Linux distribution cdrom set.
Slackware has them in the conrtib directory, i belve other distro's have
them there also.

You WILL certainly need an IP address to even be able to use 'kissattach.
If you do not have a 44-ampr.org IP# then use one from the 192.168.0.x
range.
