Hi All,
having some troubles with soundmodem stuff in kernel 2.2.17. I have tried
this on two machines. I'll detail each of them seperately.
The first machine is an HP Omnibook 800CT with RedHat 6.0. I had many
problems with the soundmodem driver until I got /etc/conf.modules set up
correctly. The radio here is a Tekk KS-960. I have built two different
serial wiring harnesses, the first was just straight-through, no
components. Next, I built the cables as described in Thomas Sailer's
document. Both had the same problem: the radio started transmitting as
soon as the cable was connected to the serial port, and continued to
transmit as long as it was connected.
some things I have checked.
1) the interface is up, as ifconfig shows.
2) soundmodem would seem to be working as a data stream is heard through
the soundcard (ESS1888 built into the laptop).
3) lsmod shows the modules up and running.
4) /proc/ioports shows the serial port's address (0x3f8) as used by sm
ptt.
5) I have setserial /dev/ttyS0 uart none.
Any ideas?
Giving up on the serial port, next I tried the parallel port. Same
'tx always on' problem.
1) I compiled the support for the parallel port as a module and have not
loaded it.
2) I changed my conf.modules so sethdlc loads pario instead of serio.
3) /proc/ioports shows parallel port PTT
4) nothing equivalent to setserial that I have to do here, is there?
A few thoughts:
I've noticed that when the soundmodem drivers are not loaded, the behavior
(tx always on) is the same as when they are. Maybe, somehow, the PTT
drivers are broken? Isn't it kind of strange to have "tx on" be the
default? Someone could accidently transmit that way. Is this what other
people see as the PTT default behavior?
Any advice is appreciated. Let me know what files (other than /etc/passwd
;) )I should include in my messages.
I'll leave my problems with debian (on a desktop) for another message.
73,
N1YRK
p.s. I am working on creating ham-centric linux distribution. Does anyone
know of work that's already been done in this area?
