    It could be many things. It could be the Parport cable, the SuperIO
    chip, or the external components around the SuperIO (esp. large caps
    to ground at the parport signals).

    You can also try to use ECP mode, as it is less sensitive.

    Maybe it does EPP software emulation?

    The user mode driver does EPP software emulation, the 2.2 kernel
    does not, which explains this.

    strings.
