    In my experience, the Debian distribution is one of the simplest to be
    installed via FTP. You have to download either some files to put onto a DOS
    partition on the harddisk or some diskette images. With them, you can set up
    a minimal Linux system that is able to fetch all additional packages via FTP.
    It worked like a charm. This way, I set up our printserver, which is an old
    386 with only a small harddisk and a diskette drive.

    www.debian.org should have all necessary information.
